Darrell Upp of Greenfield, Ohio has a home bordered on one side by a forest and on the other three sides by corn and bean fields. One night, he let his two dogs, Skeeter, a 13-pound Miniature Rat Terrier and Bella, a 75-pound bulldog, outside to play. As he watched, Skeeter suddenly ran into the woods a suddenly started screaming in pain. As Darrell ran toward the noise, he saw that Skeeter was in the jaws of a coyote. Darrell reports, “For those of you who believe a bulldog is slow, let me tell you, Bella covered the distance to the coyote fast! Bella slammed into the coyote at full speed, knocking it to the ground and freeing Skeeter!”
As Bella chased the coyote into the forest, Darrell picked up Skeeter and took her to the veterinarian. Bella stayed right at Skeeters side the entire time. Skeeter recovered from her ordeal quickly and the two dogs continue to be best friends.
Looking back on the incident, Darrell says it was evident Bella acted in total disregard for her own safety to rescue Skeeter. Like humans, it was clear Bella was willing to put her life on the line to help another.
